What are the key features that families should consider when choosing a car?

I think when you're looking for a car, you need to be looking at what it needs to do for your lifestyle. So, do we have kids involved in sports? Therefore, are we carrying a lot of sporting gear? Do we use it for work during the week and then for weekends? Or is it going to be, for example, in some cases where people I deal with, it can become the second car. This is the weekend car we use, you know, public transport through the week to get to and from work. Or we have this car to do that, but this one's going to be for the weekend where we all go as a family. So, I think space, comfort, and definitely reliability have to be important factors these days.

Which Toyota models do you recommend for families and why?

There's a very big lean towards SUV-type vehicles. In our range, that starts with the smaller Yaris Cross, then the Corolla Cross, which are wagon-format cars, and then you move to the RAV4 and up to the bigger Kluger. Then you can go onwards to the larger four-wheel drives. But still, in the range, we have the Corolla sedan and the Camry sedan. So, again, I think what a family or group of people are going to utilise the car for will determine what they want. Some people like to be higher off the ground, so something like a RAV4 or Corolla Cross will suit that need really well.

The good thing is, with all Toyotas these days, as a brand new car, they all come with a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty, and all of our hybrid models also come with a five-year service plan.

What advice do you have for families trying to decide between an SUV, sedan, or hybrid vehicle?

I think it comes down to their needs. Again, we have very detailed exploratory conversations with our customers to find out why they're looking for a car. What has motivated them to say, "I need to change the current vehicle I have, and these are the reasons why." I think with the cost of living and rising fuel prices, hybrid cars are definitely the way to go in that class of vehicle. I own a RAV4 Cruiser at home and drive a Camry Hybrid as a company vehicle—both hybrids. The benefit of the RAV4 is that it has a mid-sized fuel tank that delivers over 900 kilometres of range. So, you don't have to go and spend money at the fuel station as often, thanks to the hybrid system.

Are there any features in Toyota vehicles that can significantly benefit busy families?

Absolutely. For example, the RAV4 has a large wagon area, ideal for storing sporting gear, work equipment, or family items. Safety features have been a priority for Toyota for a long time. With models like the RAV4, standard features include front and rear parking sensors, reverse cameras, lane departure warnings, and blind-spot monitors. The rear cross-traffic alert is great for families, as it detects metal and moving objects 30 metres on either side of the car when you're backing out, and alerts you with a beep and flashes on the blind-spot monitors. These are really helpful features, especially when you've got noisy kids in the back seat.

What makes Toyota a great choice for families looking for reliability and longevity in their vehicle?

The first thing that comes to mind is Toyota's history of producing quality, reliable, and durable vehicles. Toyota was the first to introduce capped-price servicing. For example, with the RAV4, each service is 12 months or 15,000 kilometres and for the first five years each of those services will only cost you, the owner $260 to do, and that's parts and labour included.

Everyone in my family drives a Toyota. One of his boys first car was a Corolla which Jon bought brand new and handed over to him in 2017—his son still drives it today. For Jon's family, it's a passion to have a car that meets all of their needs but, most importantly, it's a car that brings them back home without any worries.
